Ph.D., Hispanic Studies

Alexandra’s research focuses on the development of genre convention in 20th and 21st century Latin American irrealist literatures, especially the fantastic and science fiction.

Her dissertation, titled The Gadget Story: Machine Futures in Latin American Science Fiction, examines how processes of industrialization are registered in science fiction novels from Chile, Argentina, and Cuba that feature imagined technologies. She argues that throughout the 20th and early 21st centuries, these gadget stories articulate a theory of dependent capitalism by reconfiguring tropes from other science fiction traditions.
