Undergraduate Programs
The undergraduate programs in Hispanic Studies and Portuguese strive to provide students with the linguistic proficiency, cultural understanding, and critical skills necessary to engage with the diverse yet interconnected Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds. Spanish, as a global language and international cultural force, extends far beyond its roots, shaping societies across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. In the United States, Hispanic and Latino cultures have become integral to the nation’s social, political, and cultural fabric, making Spanish more than just a “foreign” language. Likewise, Portuguese holds increasing global relevance, serving as the language of Brazil — South America’s largest country and a major economic and cultural powerhouse — while connecting communities across four continents.
Our curriculum reflects the dynamic evolution of Hispanic and Lusophone Studies, integrating language learning with advanced coursework in literature, history, film, media, and cultural studies. Students are invited to explore topics ranging from colonial legacies to contemporary social movements and artistic expression, engaging with perspectives that span Europe, the Americas, Africa, and beyond. Grounded in interdisciplinary inquiry, the program draws on fields such as postcolonial studies, environmental humanities, race and gender studies, to examine the complexities of these diverse societies. All of this takes place in small, intimate seminar-style classes.
Our faculty are distinguished and dedicated scholars and educators who bring a wealth of expertise to the classroom, guiding students through personalized mentorship and innovative teaching. Faculty research spans a broad range of topics, from contemporary Latin American literature to Iberian cultural studies, Afro-Caribbean and Luso-Brazilian cultures, and colonial studies. This rich intellectual environment challenges students to think critically, conduct independent research, and contribute meaningfully to the field.
The undergraduate program in Hispanic Studies also aids in preparing students for a wide variety of careers. equipping students with the communication skills, cultural literacy, and critical thinking abilities that are highly valued in today’s global job market. Courses such as Spanish for the medical professions and business Spanish and Portuguese equip students with practical language skills tailored to a host of professional settings. Many of our students take advantage of study abroad programs in Spain, Portugal and Latin America, international internships, and community engagement projects, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a wide range of multicultural environments.
Our majors are often double majors in complementary fields of study, and they enrich classroom discussions with insights from disciplines such as political science, economics, medicine, law, and the arts. This cross-disciplinary approach fosters a deeper understanding of global realities and prepares students to navigate multilingual environments and diverse professional landscapes. Our program encourages students to become informed global citizens who engage thoughtfully with the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds — and with the pressing questions of our time.
