Ph.D. Student, Spanish and Portuguese

Gema Valencia-Turco, originally from Guadalajara, México, has a background in the performing and visual arts which have informed her interest in the blurring of boundaries between different forms of artistic manifestations. Consequently, she has come to see Spanish literature studies as the common structure that encompasses areas such as language, art, religion, history, and anthropology as integrated within literary texts. She is focusing her research on the transition of oral traditions into written form by looking at the materiality of selected manuscripts in pre-modern Iberia and Mesoamerica.
