Ph.D., Hispanic Studies

My writing and teaching focus on the Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages through the late seventeenth century and the rise of the European Enlightenment. My dissertation considers the very basic question of how pre-modern and early-modern genres use examples in order to prove hypotheses and impart instruction to their readers. As part of this project, I interpret a wide range of didactic works, including Arabic commentaries on Aristotle’s Poetics, the Libro de buen amor of Juan Ruiz, and the use of anecdotal evidence in encyclopedias like Covarrubias’ Tesoro de la lengua española. Recently, I collaborated with the Rosenbach Museum and Library to create a public bilingual exhibition of the library’s Hispanic collections, including official manuscript correspondence between Hernan Cortes and King Charles V of Spain. My research has brought me to archives in Madrid, Salamanca, and the United States.
